Lipscomb Academy’s first win of the season slipped through their fingers Friday night at home and fell into the grasp of Franklin Road Academy, who won 20 - 17.
With this win, FRA picked up their first win of the season, proving both teams have had challenging starts.
“Both of us got tough schedules early on and throughout the season,” Franklin Road Academy coach Bill Whittemore said.
“So, any time we can get one, we both want it, and we both want it pretty bad, the coach added.”
Both teams showed they wanted it throughout the game. While Lipscomb led the nearly entire game until the closing minutes, FRA started the scoring. Kingston Gardener blocked and recovered a punt in the end zone to put the Panthers up early in the first.
Lipscomb took a hit on the defensive side of their team with 2 key player injuries in the first quarter. Defensive lineman Trey Rodgers and defensive end Sam Colley suffered injuries and did not return to the game.
The Mustangs responded with their high-powered offense led by quarterback Frankie Killebrew. He threw for 2 touchdowns, one to Brennan Smiley and the other to Daniel Green.
FRA closed out the half with a touchdown run from Brogan Wilson, a nearly unstoppable force on the ground. Wilson ran for 154 yards on 26 carries.
The second half was stagnant on offense for both teams. But when it mattered most, FRA delivered.
The Panthers scored with less than 2 minutes left in the game to put it away.
Next week, FRA plays Donelson Christian Academy at home, and Lipscomb Academy plays Columbia Academy at home. Kickoff for both games is 7 p.m
